Swim Meet 101

Some tips for a successful meet experience:

  • Swimmer and volunteer check in procedure: The first thing to do is get your swimmers settled. Find their bullpen, double check the entry list for any changes to their events, mark their arms for the meet's events, and prepare for warmups. Then, check with the volunteer coordinator for your assigned position and any instructions you may need for it.
  • What to bring (and what not to bring)
    • a bag to hold everything - sometimes it can be a hike from parking to the pool and you'll want to keep everything together
    • 2 towels gives you one to sit on & one to dry off
    • sunscreen and insect repellent
    • snacks & a water bottle
    • cap & goggles (and extra goggles)
    • sharpie for marking swimmers' arms - the retractable ones won't lose their caps
    • folding chairs (for parents)
    • swim meets are outdoors, at a pool, sometimes in the rain - make sure anything you bring can get WET
    • be sure to put your swimmer's name on all their things - if something gets lost, it will be easy to identify it's owner
  • Most teams offer a concession stand at meets, but it's a good idea to have something to eat (a sandwich or something with protein) before arriving at the meet. They're sure to be hungry again during the meet, so plan to bring snacks, or visit the concession stand at some point.
  • Meets consist of several parts: warmups, relays and individual events.
    • Warmups for the home team begin at 4:30; the visiting team warms up at 5:00
    • The 6 & under freestyle relay and 8 & over medley relays begin the meet at 5:30
    • Individual events
    • The 8 & over freestyle relays finish the meet
    • Dual meets are usually finished between 9 and 9:30
